During the winter months it is very important to make sure your horses are getting the proper amount of nutrition each day to maintain a healthy weight. Like all living things, horses require six main classes of nutrients to survive. Which include: water, fats, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals.

The average horse should feed 2-3 times a day, because horses are non-ruminant herbivores. They have a small stomach and require to be fed more often since they are limited in the amount of feed they can take in at once. Horses need about 15-25 pounds of forage per day along with 1-6 pounds of grain. Feeding rates are adjusted for each individual horse to maintain a desired body condition.

Performance horses that are being conditioned for showing or competing will be feed higher amounts of forages and grain. Whereas horses that are used for pleasure will not require as much feed.
